Why showers leak in Brisbane homes

Showers take more water than any other part of the house. Over time grout cracks, silicone perishes, and in older bathrooms the waterproof membrane under the tiles can fail. Brisbane's humidity also means moisture lingers, so mould and damp spread quickly once water gets out of the shower.

Leaks often show up somewhere else first: a swollen vanity or door frame, lifting floor tiles in the next room, a stain on the ceiling below, or a musty smell. The longer a leak runs, the more timber and plaster it damages.

Signs your shower is leaking

  • Cracked, missing or darkened grout
  • Mouldy or peeling silicone at corners and the screen
  • Loose or drummy tiles in or near the shower
  • Swollen skirting, door jambs or vanity
  • Damp patches or stains on the other side of the wall or on the ceiling below

Seeing any of these? Send us a few photos and we will tell you whether regrouting and resealing will do or the shower needs re waterproofing.

Common waterproofing questions

Can a leaking shower be fixed without removing tiles?

Often, yes. If the leak is through grout or silicone, regrouting and resealing can stop it. If the membrane under the tiles has failed, the shower usually needs to be stripped and re waterproofed.

How do I know if my shower is leaking?

Look for cracked or missing grout, mouldy silicone, loose tiles, swollen skirting or door frames, and damp or stains on the other side of the wall or the ceiling below.

Does insurance cover a leaking shower?

Most policies do not cover gradual leaks or wear, but some cover resulting damage. Check your policy. We can provide photos and a report of what we find.

How long before I can use the shower after repairs?

After regrouting and resealing it is usually a day or two while materials cure. After full re waterproofing and retiling it is longer. We tell you the timing in the quote.
